Official stats about abortions in Iran

Zistboom:About 250,000 and 6,000 babies are aborted illegally and legally respectively every year in Iran, director general of Health Ministrys Family Health and Population Department said.
Mohammd Ismaeil Motlaq also told Fars News Agency Iran also annually registers 100,000 stillbirths.

Addressing a roundtable about reasons behind the declining population in Iran on Monday, Motlaq said abortion and miscarriage prevention programs can save the lives of thousands of babies every year, which will increase the population of the country.

"Every year, 1,750,000 pregnancies occur in Iran, which end up with 250,000 illegal abortions and 100,000 stillbirths due to several reasons, he said, declaring that annually 350,000 babies die after birth in Iran.

"Of every 1,000 babies born annually in Iran, 16 die under one year and 18 die under five, he said.

The official noted that in view of the above figures, the number of babies who survive stands at 1,400,000 babies out of 1,750,000.

Motlaq also said the child mortality rate for children under the age of five should decline to seven in every 1,000 births by 2025.

"Iran has achieved success in reducing mother and child mortality rates over the past 35 years, he said, adding that before the Islamic Revolution, 149 of every 1,000 children died soon after birth.

Iran is now among developed nations in terms of securing the health of mother and children, and has been hailed by the United Nations for its efforts in this regard.

Abortion is illegal in Iran after the fourth month of pregnancy and is akin to murder. However, if the health of mother or baby is medically certified to be at risk, abortion is legal.
