UN backs Irans participation in Geneva II: Ban

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has once again reiterated the international organizations support for Irans participation in the upcoming Geneva II conference on Syria.
Ban made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on the sidelines of the Second International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria in the Persian Gulf kingdom of Kuwait on Tuesday.
I insisted on the necessity of Irans participation in [my] negotiations with all regional and international sides, who are involved in Syrias issue, because in my opinion Iran is a major player, Ban stated.
The UN chief also welcomed a recent agreement to start implementing the interim nuclear deal between Iran and the six major world powers, and urged all parties to meet their commitments in accordance with the deal.

Amir-Abdollahian, for his part, expressed Irans readiness to provide more humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.

The Iranian official also said that Tehran is ready to take part in the Geneva II talks if invited and without any preconditions.

He also stressed the importance of pursuing a political approach to the unrest in Syria, rejecting a military approach against the Arab country.

The senior Iranian official is also scheduled to meet with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah and a number of other senior world figures on the sidelines of the meeting.

The Geneva II meeting is scheduled to open in the Swiss city of Montreux, near Geneva, on January 22. The peace talks are aimed at putting an end to nearly three years of foreign-backed militancy in Syria.
