Police in Turkey have raided the offices of a charity organization that has been accused of sending weapons into Syria.
Police carried out the raid on Tuesday and searched the premises of the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) in the town of Kilis, located near the border with Syria, said the charitys vice president, Huseyin Oruc.

Oruc did not give any reason for the raid, saying We see this [as] part of a dirty plot.

Local media said two weeks ago that security forces confiscated a Syria-bound truck carrying a significant quantity of ammunition and weapons in the southern province of Hatay.

The security forces also arrested three people who claimed they were carrying aid on behalf of the IHH.

The charity, however, rejected the allegation as slanderous.

In December, the UN Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade) said in a report that Turkey has sent over 47 tons of weaponry to the foreign-sponsored militants operating inside Syria since June 2013.

Based on the data, Turkey sent different amounts of guns, including shotguns and hunting rifles, to the militants, with the highest reaching nearly 29 tons in September alone.

Turkish security forces also confiscated a truck carrying nearly 1,000 rocket heads in the southern city of Adana near the Syrian border in November.

Turkeys army seized a large quantity of chemicals near the southeastern town of Reyhanli on the countrys border with Syria in the same month.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy for nearly three years. The border region between the two countries has also been witnessing Syrian refugees fleeing the violence in their homeland.
