Baghdad, Jan 14, IRNA – Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif conferred on Tuesday with Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari on expansion of relations and border cooperation as well as border demarcation.

The two ministers discussed implementing an agreement already signed between Iran and Iraq on broadening cooperation on border issues.

After the meeting, the two minister took part in a joint press confers and answered the questions posed by reporters.

The two foreign ministers described the agreement already signed between the two countries as very significant.

Most of the current border issues could be resolved through close cooperation between Iran and Iraq, said the Iraqi minister.

The Iraqi expert delegation comprising legal experts from different ministries have planned to enhance level of cooperation in water borders as well as shipping, Zebari said.

Iranˈs foreign minister, for his part, said that we would like to enthusiastically welcome the visit of the Iraqi foreign minister within coming two weeks to sign a significant deal to this end.

Zarif also expressed the hope that these agreements help implement projects at border waterways of Arvandrood or Shatt al-Arab.

The ground for expansion of cooperation is well prepared despite of existing threats and challenges, Zarif said.

On humanitarian crisis in Syria, Zarif said that the Syrian people must decide their own fate.

On the upcoming international conference on Syria due to be held in Switzerland, Zarif expressed the hope that the event will be successful, calling for contribution of all countries in the region including Iraq.

Zarif said that all should do their best to bring Syrian groups to the negotiating table to let Syrian people make decision on their fate without the interference of aliens, extremists and the terrorist groups.

He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran accepts no precondition to take part in Geneva 2 conference.

Zebari said that absence of Iran in Geneva 2 confab will be useful and the Iraqi government believes that Iran would play positive role to this end.

Iraq has always underlined that contribution of Iran to international confab on Syria is very significant, Zebari said.
