No exact date set for Iran-Sextet new talks: Araqchi

An Iranian nuclear negotiator says no exact date has been set for the resumption of talks between Tehran and six major world powers on Irans nuclear energy program.
[Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad] Zarif and [EU foreign policy chief Catherine] Ashton are scheduled to hold a meeting about this issue. It seems that the meeting will be held in February but no decision has been made yet about the exact date of the meeting, Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi said Monday.

Iran and the P5+1 countries have a mutual understanding that after the implementation of the first step of the Geneva deal, they will start talks about the final step to discuss and finalize details and ways to hold negotiations, he added.

Araqchi said on Sunday that Iran and the six world powers have agreed to start implementing the Geneva nuclear agreement on January 20.

Today, Iran and the P5+1 finalized an agreement on ways to take the first step to implement the Joint Plan of Action. The two sides reached a consensus, he stated.

The development comes two days after Iran and the Sextet of world powers concluded two days of talks in Geneva about how to implement the landmark deal.

The deal was clinched on November 24, 2013, between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council Russia, China, Britain, France and the US plus Germany in the Swiss city of Geneva, under which the six countries agreed to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.

It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions will be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.

A diplomatic source told Reuters on Monday that Iran and the six powers will very likely hold nuclear talks in February, shortly after the six-month Geneva deal goes into effect.
