Iran will not give up nuclear rights: MP

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic will not give up its right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The Islamic Republic of Iran will not give up the Iranian nations right to use peaceful nuclear technology within the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) framework, said chairman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Pat Breen, the chairman of the Oireachtas (Irish National Parliament) Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee in Tehran on Saturday.

He said Iran wants to use the advantages of the NPT which allows the application of nuclear energy for civilian purposes.

Regarding bilateral relations, the top Iranian lawmaker said the Islamic Republics foreign policy is expanding ties with European countries based on mutual respect and in areas of mutual interest.

Breen, for his part, said Ireland welcomes the exchange of political and trade delegations with Iran as well as constant consultations between the officials of the two countries.

Breen, who is heading a parliamentary delegation in his official visit to Iran, also said that his country welcomes the recent nuclear deal sealed between Iran and six world powers and hoped for a final agreement over Tehrans nuclear energy program.

After days of intense negotiations, Iran and six powers - Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany - reached a deal on November 24, 2013 in the Swiss city of Geneva to set the stage for the settlement of the dispute over the Islamic Republics nuclear energy program.

Under the Geneva deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.
