Iran nuclear deal to take effect on January 20: Ashton

Ashton, who represents the six major world powers Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany -- in nuclear negotiations with Tehran, made the comments in a statement issued on Sunday.
The EU official further stated that the Sextet will ask the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify the implementation of the landmark nuclear deal, which was signed between Tehran and the six countries in the Swiss city of Geneva on November 24, 2013.
We will ask the IAEA to undertake the necessary nuclear-related monitoring and verification activities, said the EU diplomat.
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham also mentioned the same date for the activation of the Geneva nuclear deal, saying, Iran and the P5+1 have reached agreement on how to implement the first phase of the Joint Plan of Action.

The announcement comes two days after representatives from Iran and the six world powers wrapped up two days of discussions in Geneva about how to execute the historic nuclear accord.

On January 10, Tehran and the European Union said very good progress had been made in the two-day negotiations over outstanding issues pertaining to the activation of the deal.

Under the Geneva agreement, the Sextet undertook to lift some of the existing sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehrans confidence-building measure to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities for a six-month period.

It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.
