Araqchi, Schmid to resolve remaining nuclear issues

Araqchi, Schmid to resolve remaining nuclear issues

Two top Iranian and European diplomats are to meet to resolve the remaining issues over Tehrans nuclear energy program

Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi, and Helga Schmid, a deputy for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, will meet soon to resolve the remaining nuclear issues, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American affairs Majid Takht-e Ravanchi said on Friday.
The issues that Iran and six major world powers failed to resolve during expert-level negotiations would be settled during a meeting between Araqchi and Schmid,
The meeting between Araqchi and Schmid will be held in a European city within the next days, he added.

The Iranian diplomat noted that expert-level talks between Iran and the Sextet are almost over.

Only one or two issues have remained which require a political decision by both sides to be settled, Takht-e Ravanchi said.

Experts from Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US - plus Germany concluded their latest round of talks on December 31 which were aimed at devising a mechanism to implement a landmark interim deal reached between the two sides in the Swiss city of Geneva on November 24.

Under the Geneva deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.

Takht-e Ravanchi further said that no exact date has been set for the implementation of the Geneva deal.

After the settlement of the issues remaining from the expert-level talks by Araqchi and Schmid, the exact date to begin implementing the first step [of the deal] will be announced, and then the two sides will start putting the joint Action Plan into force within the framework of the Geneva agreement, he stated.
