Lebanon says arrest of man behind Iran Embassy attack unclear

Lebanese caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn says he could neither deny, nor confirm the arrest of the leader of an al-Qaeda-linked group involved in a bomb attack on Iranian Embassy in Beirut in November.

Earlier on Wednesday, AFP said the defense minister had told the news agency that Majed al-Majed, the Saudi commander of the al-Qaeda-affiliated group, Abdullah Azzam Brigades, captured by the countrys intelligence service in Beirut.

It is not clear yet when the arrest happened. Majed is a high-profile terrorist wanted by the US and other countries.

He had earlier traveled to Syria to pledge his allegiance to the notorious al-Nusra Front, which is fighting against the government of President Bashar al Assad.

On November 19, two bomb attacks outside the Iranian Embassy in Beirut killed 25 people and injured more than 150. Iran Cultural Attach to Beirut Hojjatoleslam Ebrahim Ansari and the wife of another Iranian diplomat were among those killed.

Following the incident, Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the bombings.

The arrest is seen as a major achievement for the Lebanese army, which has seen a series of suspicious bombings and assassinations in the country in recent years.

On December 3, Hezbollah Secretary-General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah said Saudi Arabia is behind the bombing against the Iranian Embassy, adding that he has no doubt that the Saudi intelligence agency has close links with the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades is a bona fide group that has a Saudi emir and its leadership is directly linked to Saudi intelligence, Nasrallah added.
The Hezbollah chief also noted that the bombing was Saudi Arabias expression of anger against Tehran because of Riyadhs defeat in Syria.
