Iran, Russia negotiating construction of new N-plants

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi says the Islamic Republic and Russia are discussing the construction of new nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Iran.

Salehi said on Saturday that Tehran is negotiating the construction of four nuclear power plants with Moscow.

Russian Ambassador to Iran Levan Dzhagaryan said in September that Moscow was ready to increase its nuclear cooperation with Tehran even after the Islamic Republic permanently takes full control of the Russian-built Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

Salehi added that Bushehr NPP would be temporarily shut down in order to change the fuel rods at the core of the facility.

Iran officially took over the first unit of the plant from Russia for two years in September. The Bushehr NPP became officially operational and was connected to Irans national grid in September 2011.

Salehi further noted that Iran has produced two types of second-generation centrifuges, the capacities of which are two times that of the first-generation model.
Despite installing 1,000 second-generation centrifuges, we have not injected gas into them due to the negotiations and the Geneva agreement, the Iranian official said.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany sealed an interim deal in Geneva on November 24, under which the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, such as not putting into operation any additional centrifuges, for six months.

According to the agreement, Iran can, however, continue to develop centrifuges and carry out related research.
