Lavrov calls for Iran presence in international conference on Syria

Moscow, Dec 25, IRNA Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday stressed the necessity of Irans presence in the upcoming international conference aiming to end the humanitarian crisis in Syria, according to Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation.

On the procedure to implement the nuclear deal struck in Geneva on November 24, Lavrov said that breakthrough steps have been taken, but, as envisaged in the first-step deal there still needs a comprehensive settlement to the issue.

He said that experts from Iran and the P5+1 are currently working on step-by-step implementation of the nuclear deal which will go through reciprocal actions from the two parties to the deal.

Lavrov said that according to the deal each party will reciprocate the steps taken by the other and successful implementation of the deal in a six-month timeframe will lead to a comprehensive settlement of the dispute.

Meanwhile the Russian foreign minister said the issue of Irans participation in the upcoming conference on Syria has not been solved yet and Iran has not been included in the list of countries to attend the conference.

Moscow believes that all countries which can influence the situation in Syria should be invited to the conference, Lavrov said.

On the participation of regional countries in the conference, the Russian foreign minister said that first of all the Syrian neighboring countries should attend the conference and at the same time Iran and Saudi Arabia should take part in the event for their influence.

He called any opposition to Iran?s presence as unrealistic and ideological approach to the issue.

Lavrov said that certain countries argue that as Iran has not signed Geneva agreement in the previous conference on Syria, it will play non-constructive role in the upcoming conference but among those the Western governmens have no objection to their presence there are countries that they have done nothing to help the Conference and they made efforts to damage the mediatory process.

The European governments welcome Irans presence in the Conference and the Arab governments agree to, Lavrov said, adding that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his special envoy in Syria insist that Iran should attend the Conference.

The US is doubtful about whether Iran should attend, he said, but there is still enough time and we will talk to them in this regard.

Ideological concerns could not prevent the US from holding talks with Iran over Iraq and Afghanistan, Lavrov said, adding that Washington will not hesitate to engage in talks with Iran.
