Syrian army mop-up continues across country

The Syrian army has conducted successful mop-up operations in several areas across the Arab country, inflicting heavy losses on foreign-sponsored militants fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

According to military sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, the army continued its clean-up operations in the countryside of the capital Damascus, killing dozens of the militants.

The army destroyed a hideout for the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front in Douma, killing scores of the militants and destroying their weapons and ammunition, the sources said.

The army also stormed militants hideouts in the cities of al-Zabadani and al-Nabek, killing and injuring many of them.

In the northern city of Aleppo, government forces attacked militants positions in al-Marjeh, al-Sukari, and al-Salihin neighborhoods, killing dozens of them.

Elsewhere, a number of the militants were killed or wounded in mop-up operations conducted by the army in many areas in the southern city of Dara'a.

In the western Homs Province, the Syrian army killed a number of militants in al-Breij and al-Houla areas, destroying their hideouts.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria since 2011.

The UN also says more than four million other Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country.

Two million Syrians are expected to take refuge outside the country while another 2.25 million are predicted to be internally displaced next year.
