Iran’s Cinema Vérité film festival 2013 winners announced


The seventh edition of Iran’s Cinema Vérité International Documentary Film Festival has announced the names of winners during a ceremony held at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall.
Iranian filmmaker Mostafa Razzaq Karimi’s Memories for All Seasons and Polish director Maciej Drygas’s Abu Harazhave shared the Best Feature-Length Documentary Award at the international competition section of this year’s festival.

The Special Jury Award of the international feature-length section was presented to the Danish filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing.

The Best Semi-Feature Length Documentary Award went toWoolen Doll by Iranian director Ezzatollah Parvazeh while the Polish filmmaker Pawel Lozinski’s Father and Sonreceived the Special Jury Prize of the section.


In the short documentary section, the Best Documentary Award went to Slomo by the American director Joshua Izenberg and the French documentarian Mina Rad was awarded with the special jury prize for her film For Me the Sun Never Sets.

At the national section, Mehdi Nour Mohammadi picked up the Best Feature-Length Documentary for  his film Under the Shelter of Oak.

The Semi-Feature Length Documentary Award of the section went to No Honking Please! by Reza Farahmand.

The eminent Iranian filmmakers Nasser Taqvai and Seyyed Hossein Bani-Hashemi were also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the closing ceremony of the event.

Italian director Rossella Ragazzi, Indian film expert Amrit Gangar, Russian director Pavel Petchenkin along with Iranian filmmakers Rakhshan Bani-Etemad and Alireza Shojanouri served at the international jury panel of the event.

According to an earlier announcement, Mohammad Afarideh, Mojtaba Raie, Ja’afar Sanei Moghaddam, Farhad Mehranfar, Mehrdad Oskui, Mostafa Al e Ahmad and Ebrahim Haqiqi were also selected to judge at the national section of the festival.

The films competed in various categories including short documentaries, medium-length documentaries, and full-length documentaries, as well as Special section of international competitive and non-competitive section.

Iran’s 2013 Cinema Vérité International Documentary Film Festival hosted a wide range of productions such as political, historical, ritualistic, religious, social, environmental, scientific, ethnological and war documentaries.

A new section of Docudrama films was also presented in three categories of short, semi-length, full-length productions at this year’s festival.

The works of 11 women filmmakers from among 108 female documentarians also contended for awards at the different categories of the national section such as Social documentary, Islamic Revolution and Scarified Defense, Portrait Documentary and Anthropology Documentary.

Organized by Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC), the annual festival tries to express the relationship between reality and truth though documentary films.

The seventh Cinema Vérité International Documentary Film Festival took place from December 10 to 17, 2013.
