Iran, Iraq urge swift cessation of Syrian conflict

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq have stressed that they share common views on the Syrian crisis, calling for an immediate end to the violence in the crisis-stricken Arab nation.
During a meeting between Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Muhammed Jawad al-Dooreki in Baghdad on Tuesday, the two sides discussed the latest developments in Syria, and demanded the instant cessation of the conflict and the resumption of Syrian-Syrian talks.

They also noted that the crisis in Syria should be resolved through a political solution and not a military strike, criticizing the double standards exercised by certain countries vis--vis the campaign against terrorism.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.

Amir-Abdollahian also described the expansion of Tehran-Baghdad strategic relations as important for the regional security and stability, stating that the Islamic Republic of Iran is fully determined to enhance the level of ties with neighboring Iraq.

The senior Iranian official further briefed the Iraqi deputy foreign minister on the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain -- plus Germany over Tehrans nuclear energy program.

Dooreki, for his part, praised diplomatic contacts between Iraq and Iran, and voiced his countrys readiness to host joint expert-level talks on various issues.
