Iran to defend sovereignty regardless of deals: IRGC

A senior commander of Irans Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says Tehran responds to any threat to the countrys sovereignty.
Whenever we feel our sovereignty could be violated... we will tread on all agreements whatsoever, IRGC Deputy Commander Brigadier General Hossein Salami said on Wednesday.

Salami stated that Iran will exhaust all diplomatic channels to avoid a crisis and resolve issues in a peaceful way.

But when all diplomatic channels are closed and the enemy threatens us with a military strike, we will make use of our military prowess, he stated.

The IRGC official described Irans recent nuclear deal with the world powers in Geneva as a diplomatic achievement after a decade of resistance against threats and sanctions from the US and its allies.

Halting the enemys strategy of sanctions amounts to a success, he explained, rejecting some cynical comments at home on the landmark deal.

Salami insisted that under the agreement, Western sanctions must be lifted against Iran; otherwise, Tehrans nuclear activity would return to the point it was prior to the November agreement.

If they fail to meet their commitments, we must not display any flexibility, he said, adding that Iran has taken all necessary confidence-building measures.

On November 24, Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States -- plus Germany inked an interim deal in Geneva to pave the way for the full resolution of the Wests decade-old dispute with Iran over the countrys nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the United States and its allies have agreed to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
