A senior pro-Israel US senator says he intends to pursue imposing additional sanctions against Tehran after the disproportionate deal between Iran and the Sextet powers in Geneva."I am disappointed by the terms of the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 nations because it does not seem proportional. Iran simply freezes its nuclear capabilities while we reduce the sanctions, Charles Schumer, a member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), said on Sunday.
Schumer made the remarks several hours after Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council- Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany announced they had sealed a deal over Tehrans nuclear energy program in Geneva.
The Geneva agreement has been welcomed the international community.
The deal, which was achieved despite an intense and extensive lobbying campaign by Israel, would pave the way for the full resolution of the Wests decade-old dispute with Iran over the countrys nuclear energy program.
In exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the United States and its allies have undertaken to lift some of the existing sanctions against Iran.
"As for additional sanctions, this disproportionality of this agreement makes it more likely that Democrats and Republicans will join together and pass additional sanctions when we return in December. I intend to discuss that possibility with my colleagues," Schumer added.
This is while according to the interim agreement, no new sanctions should be imposed against Iran over the course of the next six months.
Meanwhile, a group of US senators plan to introduce a legislation to impose new sanctions against Iran if negotiations fail or Iran does not comply with the interim deal.
Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Robert Menendez said in a statement on Sunday that the bill would "provide for a six-month window to reach a final agreement before imposing new sanctions on Iran."
Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned in the same day that any breach of agreement by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany would propel the Islamic Republic to take alternative measures.
