Iran enrichment right must be part of any deal: Deputy FM

Iran deputy foreign minister for international and legal affairs says Tehran will not accept any deal that does not recognize the Islamic Republics right to enrich uranium as talks between Iran and the Sextet continue in Geneva.
Abbas Araqchi, who is also a member of Irans negotiating team, said on Thursday that any deal between Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany must include Irans right to enrichment.

This is while US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that the issue of whether the Sextet will agree to nuclear enrichment inside Iran will not be decided in an interim deal under discussion in Geneva.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister said the enrichment in itself is not negotiable, adding, however, that the extent, level and location of enrichment can be negotiated.

Araqchi added that the differences of opinion among the six countries in the previous round of talks in Geneva had slowed down the progress of the negotiations and eroded the Iranian sides trust that its negotiating partners would remain committed to potential agreements.

Iran and the Sextet -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany -- began their new round of negotiations over Tehrans nuclear energy program in the Swiss city of Geneva on Wednesday. The two sides had previously met in Geneva in early November.

Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, who represents the six powers in the talks, held a bilateral meeting on Thursday morning.

Ashtons spokesman Michael Mann said the talks had been very substantial and detailed.

Zarif and Ashton, who also held a one-to-one meeting on Wednesday, are scheduled to meet for a third time later on Thursday.
