‘Leading militant commanders killed or wounded’

Several leading militant commanders have been reportedly killed or wounded in attacks carried out by Syrian army forces in different parts of the Arab country.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday that a senior commander of the terrorist Tawhid Brigade group lost his life in an airstrike in northwestern province of Aleppo.

“Youssef al-Abbas, known as Abu al-Tayyeb, was intelligence chief for Tawhid and was killed in a strike Thursday on an army base captured by the rebels a year ago,” the Britain-based opposition group said.

It added that the group's chief Abdel-Qader Saleh and its another senior figure, Abdel-Aziz Salameh, sustained injures in the attack.

A video posted on the internet after the attack shows Salameh resting in a hospital.

Tawhid militants, following the attack, detained 30 locals suspected of being informers for government forces.

The observatory added that four other militant commanders also were killed in separate incidents in the provinces of Aleppo and Homs.

Meanwhile, two commanders of rebel battalions lost their lives in fighting with army forces near the international airport outside Aleppo City.

A defected army colonel who commanded another militant brigade was killed in clashes in the Maaret al-Artiq area of Aleppo.

In recent weeks, the Syrian Army made fresh advances in its fight against foreign-backed militants.

Militant forces have suffered heavy losses in the fighting. They have also called for a mass mobilization to stop government advances on the province of Aleppo.

According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the deadly unrest that has gripped Syria since March 2011.

The Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

In May, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said militants from 29 different countries are fighting against his government forces in different parts of the country.
