UN chief warns against Syria worsening situation

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned against the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.
The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate rapidly and dramatically. More than 9 million people in Syria -- nearly half the countrys population -- need humanitarian assistance, said the UN chief in a statement on Monday.

I am gravely concerned that we have been unable to reach 2.5 million people trapped in hard-to-reach areas, Ban added.

He also called on all parties in Syria to protect civilians and facilitate the process of aiding them.
I urge all parties, and all those with influence over them, to ensure the protection of civilians, safe passage for medical personnel and supplies, and the unhindered delivery of aid, he said.
He further asked all countries in the world to provide more life-saving assistance for Syria.

The humanitarian response is also being hampered by a severe lack of funding. I will be organizing a High-Level Pledging Conference for Syria in January in Kuwait. But let me be clear: you need not wait until then to provide support. The Syrian people are desperate for help today, he said.

Ban also called for a political solution to crisis in the Middle Eastern country, saying, Ultimately, the only way to end the unconscionable violence and suffering is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process. We continue working hard to convene the Geneva II conference before the end of this year.

The Geneva 2 initiative was proposed by Russia and the United States on May 7.

The date of the long-awaited event has changed many times as the foreign-backed opposition remains divided over attending the talks.

According to statistics compiled by the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced in nearly three years of turmoil in Syria.
