Only Syrians can decide their future: Syrian FM

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem says only the Syrian people can choose their political future and leaders, rejecting all forms of external intervention.
"Syria will attend Geneva II based on the exclusive right of the Syrian people to choose their political future, to choose their leaders and to reject all forms of external intervention," Muallem said in a meeting with the UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Tuesday.

Brahimi arrived in Damascus on Monday as part of a tour aimed at garnering support for the upcoming talks on the Syrian crisis in Geneva aimed at finding a political solution to the conflict.

"The dialogue will take place between Syrians," he added.

Commenting on a recent meeting between the representatives of Syria opposition coalition and foreign ministers of the so-called Friends of Syria group in London, which decided that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had no future role to play in the country, Muallem said the statement was an infringement on the rights of the Syrian people.

Brahimi had traveled to several countries including Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and Iran before arriving in Syria to prepare the ground for the Geneva 2 conference.

The planned conference was proposed by Russia and the US on May 7. The date of the long-delayed event has changed many times as Syria's foreign-backed opposition coalition remains divided over participating in the meeting.

On Sunday, more than twenty foreign-backed militant groups fighting against the Syrian government rejected the Geneva 2 conference.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the US and Saudi Arabia, along with their Western and regional allies, are supporting the Takfiri groups operating inside the country.
