IRGC Commander emphasizes strategic importance of Persian Gulf
TEHRAN (Tasnim) Unlike other strategic regions in the world with periodic degree of significance, the Persian Gulf has been always at the pinnacle of importance, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said today.

The importance of all those regions in the world referred to as strategic zones are periodic, but the Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz have always remained at the highest degree of importance, Lieutenant Commander of the IRGC Navy General Ali Reza Tangsirisaid in a gathering of IRGC personnel, in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Monday.

Iran is now the main power providing security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring the safe passage of energy supplies through the strategic region.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, connects the Persian Gulf with the Sea of Oman.

It is the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the high seas and is one of the world's most strategically-important choke points.

Nearly 40 percent of the world's traded crude oil also passes through this waterway.

The Islamic Republic maintains that the drills staged by the IRGC or the Army in the Persian Gulf and the sensetive waterway are defensive in nature and meant to convey a message of peace and friendship to regional countries.

In August, General Tangsiri had announced that the IRGC Navy is fully prepared to safeguard security and stability in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC Navy safeguards the stability and security of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz with dignity and power, he stated at the time.
