The city bears a history that goes back to 6th century BCE when it was conquered by the Achaemenid king, Cyrus II and incorporated into the Persian Empire.

During the Ghaznavid dynasty era, from 975 to 1186 CE, Ghazni was the capital of Persian Empire. It was the center of the Persian culture and language then.

The city was also considered as one of the most important commercial and cultural hubs of the Islamic world.

While the city treasures various historical monuments, it is also known for its diverse Islamic architecture.

Today, the city with a population of about 141,000 people stands as one of the major buoyant trade and industrial centers of Afghanistan.

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) named the city as the capital of Islamic culture and civilization for 2013.
