Iran accepts no pre-condition for Geneva II confab, diplomat

Tehran, Oct 21, IRNA Deputy foreign minister for Euro-American affairs said Monday that Iran will not accept any pre-condition for attending the Geneva II conference on Syria.
Majid Takht Ravanchi made the remarks in a meeting with visiting President of the Socialists in the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda and his accompanying delegation.

He voiced Irans readiness to play a positive role in the Geneva confab.

As to anti-Iran sanctions, Takht Ravanchi said the West, particularly the US should lift the restrictions in line with the confidence building trend, referreing to the sanctions as illegitimate.

For his part, the European official referred to the influential role Iran plays in the region and stressed the significance of Tehrans presence in the Geneva II conference.

Swoboda said his visit to Iran is aimed at resuming parliamentary relations between the two nations.

The two further stressed the need to settle the Syrian crisis through peaceful means and with participation of all influential sides.

The Iranian and German officials then said terrorist and extremist groups are threatening the global and regional peace and stability and underlined the need to fight against such phenomena.

The five-member delegation of the European Parliament arrived in Tehran on October 19 to review issues of mutual interest with Iranian officials.

Swoboda is visiting Tehran at the invitation of Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani.
