Iran snatches silver in Asian rowing competitions

Iranian female athletes have grabbed a silver medal at the 2013 Asian Rowing Junior Championships in Uzbekistan.
Irans lightweight women's quadruple sculls repechage was impressive in the final race on Tuesday, and clocked 7:14.46 to pick up a silver medal.

Tahereh Hozouri, Maryam Karami, Mahdis Habibi and Maryam Omidi-Parsa edged out Kazakhstan in the race for the second spot, well behind China.

The Chinese crew dominated the race from start to finish and looked set for gold.

Meanwhile, Iranian men's double sculls repechage, Armin Karambin and Javad Mohammad Jafari, competed against opponents from China, Uzbekistan, Japan, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong, and could land in the fourth place with a time of 7:13.29.

Maryam Karami powered past rivals from Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia in the women's single sculls, won Heat 1 with a time of 9:23.66, and qualified for the final. She finished in the seventh place in the final.

In the mens quadruple sweeping competitions, the Iranian squad of Bahram Piri, Mohammad Zareei, Hamid Reza Choubdari and Mohammad Rostami vied with rowers from Uzbekistan, China, India and Kazakhstan, and booked the fifth spot.

Iranian rowers also finished sixth in the womens double sweeping contests.

The 2013 Asian Rowing Junior Championships started in the Uzbek city of Samarkand on October 13, and will wrap up on October 17.
