Four killed in Damascus mortar attacks

At least four Syrians including a child have been killed in mortar attacks in central Damascus and a suburb of the Syrian capital.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday that at least three civilians were killed when foreign-backed militants fired mortar rounds against the capitals suburb of Jaramana.

Mortar attacks on the Abu Rummaneh district of the capital also left an eight-year-old girl dead while she was staying in a car.

On Wednesday, the militants fired two mortar rounds which hit the central bank in the capitals Sabaa Bahrat square. The Iraqi consulate had been targeted by a mortar round a week earlier, killing a woman.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million others displaced due to the violence.

The UN said earlier that more than four million other Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country.

Two million Syrians are expected to take refuge outside the country while another 2.25 million are predicted to be internally displaced in the next year.
