Commander: West seeking to weaken Islamic Republic internally

TEHRAN (Tasnim) The West is at loggerheads with Iran over the principles of the Islamic Republic, a senior Iranian commander said, adding that the enemies are seeking to weaken the country from within as they can not confront it directly.

The enemies are opposed to the existence of this system and know well that we use the nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and have no problem with that, Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Organization Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said in Mashhad on Wednesday.

As the enemies are not able to directly engae in a war with Iran, the commander argued, they are trying to create tensions with the aim of undermining the country's power and their actions are a testimony to their intention.

"West Asia has now become a faultline of instability and in fact it is our enemies who have turned the region into a fertile ground for clashes," Hajizadeh said. " They have put sowing discord among Shiites and Sunnis on their agenda, something that is easy to notice in the violent clashes across the region."

Commander of Iran's Basij (volunteer) Force Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, too, had warned on October 27 that the US and Israel seek to foment discord among the Iranian people, explaining that such a move is aimed at preventing Iran form gaining the upper hand in nuclear talks with the six world powers.

Rift and schism not only undermine the countrys position in nuclear talks and give the enemy a superior position in the negotiations, but also prepare the ground for return of hegemony to the country, Naqdi added.

His remarks come ahead of a fresh round of nuclear talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany), which are due to take place on October 15 and 16 in Geneva.
