Tabriz, East Azarbaijan Prov., Oct 5, IRNA The UN Resident Coordinator and UNDPRepresentative, Gary Lewis, has visited Orumiyeh Lake, it was announced on Saturday.Director General of Department of Environment in West Azarbaijan province Boyuk Reisi told reporters that the UN envoy was concerned about degradation of environment at Orumiyeh Lake.
He said that cultivation pattern and sustainable consumption of water resources of the Lake must undergo dramatic change.
He added that unfortunately, the pace of change in pattern of cultivation and of management of water consumption by the agriculture sector failed to help Orumiyeh Lake survive.
Despite escalation of drought and the lower level of the lake water, the quality of traditional farming and gardening has not changed.
He noted that any executive works to check dry-up of the Lake needs international organizations support and transnational approach.
The time of study and research on Orumiyeh Lake dry-up is over and prioritized influential measures should be taken instead, he concluded.
Iranian and foreign scientists and environmental experts recently gathered in the northwestern Iranian city of Orumiyeh, to save the largest lake of the Middle East, which has already lost over 60% of its water.
Many blame climate change and dam construction for this environmental disaster.
The lake was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976.
