Lebanon gives death penalty to spy

Lebanons Military Tribunal has sentenced a retired army colonel to death for collaborating with Israel, a report says.
Citing a judicial source, Lebanese newspaperDaily Starreported on Saturday that the tribunal handed down the death sentence to Ghassan al-Jidd in absentia.

The court also sentenced Palestinian national Asaad Khatibto ten years in prison on similar charges.

Jidd, who fled the country in 2009, was convicted of spying for the Tel Aviv regime.

In 2010, Secretary General of the Hezbollah resistance movement Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah said that Jidd was present near the assassination scene of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri a day before the attack, which happened on February 14, 2005.

Nasrallah also said that Jidd was involved in the assassination of Hezbollah commander Ghaleb Awali in 2004 in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Over the past years, Lebanon has sentenced several people to death over charges of espionage for Israel, but none have been executed.
