IPU opportunity for promoting ties: Larijani

Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has expressed intention to promote Irans foreign relations during the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly in Geneva.
We will have meetings with officials from other countries, which we hope would lead to the expansion of relations, including economic and political ties, between Iran and other states, Larijani said before leaving the Iranian capital, Tehran, for Serbia on Sunday.

He said the Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly provides a good opportunity for such meetings and talks. Larijani added that the meetings over regional and bilateral issues would be held on the sidelines of the event.

The Iranian official will pay a two-day visit to Serbia, then head to Switzerland to attend the 129th IPU assembly in Geneva, where he is scheduled to deliver a speech.

The international event will take place from October 7 to 9 in Geneva.

The IPU assembly is the principal statutory body that expresses the views of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on political issues. It brings together lawmakers to study international problems and make recommendations for action.

During the assembly, parliamentarians will discuss the role of parliaments in protecting the rights of children, in particular unaccompanied migrant children, and in preventing their exploitation in situations of war and conflict.

The Majlis speaker plans to pay a two-day visit to Croatia after the IPU event to meet with Croatian officials.
