Iran awaits practical US measures: Iranian cleric

A senior Iranian cleric says US President Barack Obama should not be swayed by Israel, adding that Tehran expects practical measures by Washington with respect to the sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
We await practical measures by US officials; and the presidents of Iran and the US should join hands and end these cruel sanctions, which have not only harmed the Iranian nation but also the American and the European nations, Tehran interim Friday Prayers Leader Hojjatoleslam Kazem Seddiqi said.

Hojjatoleslam Seddiqi pointed to the attempts by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to dissuade the US from engaging with Iran and said, Obama must not be influenced by Netanyahu.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his American counterpart held a telephone conversation on September 27 in the first direct communication between an Iranian and a US president since Irans Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Following the landmark phone call, Netanyahu met with Obama on September 30 and asked him to toughen the sanctions against the Islamic Republic if Tehran continues what he called a nuclear weapons program.

Seddiqi also lauded Rouhanis well-put criticism of the anti-Iran sanctions during his speech at the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, saying the presidents administration of Hope and Prudence is expected to help lift the embargoes against the country through dialog.

In his UN speech on September 24, Rouhani criticized the sanctions against Iran as unfair, cruel and against human rights, which have affected the Iranian nation. He also stated that Iran poses no threat to the world and Tehran is ready for talks on its nuclear energy program with complete transparency.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and European Union using the claim as an excuse to impose illegal sanctions against Tehran.

Tehran has categorically rejected the allegation, arguing that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
