Iranian cleric Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem-Shirazi[/caption]A senior Shia cleric has condemned grotesque crimes committed by Takfiri extremists as a return to the ignorance plaguing the Arab world prior to the advent of Islam.
Unfortunately the murder of Muslims and the flames raging in Muslim countries are due to the presence of these Takfiri currents, Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi said in the holy Iranian city of Qom on Wednesday.
The cleric described the extremists as a tool in the hands of colonial powers, who save them the trouble of direct military intervention in Muslim countries.
Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi warned against the enemys plot to promote Islamophobia across the globe by highlighting the grisly murder of people and other crimes committed by the militants.
When the enemies find Islam against their illegitimate interests, they pitch Muslims against each other through these Takfiri groups to undermine and uproot Islam, he stated.
The cleric further called on all Muslim leaders to join hands to shed light on the nature of Takfiri extremism and inform the public that the militants are a small population with an incorrect interpretation of the Holy Quran and Sunnah.
Takfiris believe that only their interpretation of Islam is correct and all other Muslims are unbelievers. The extremists are widely believed to be behind gross acts of terror in several Muslim countries, namely Iraq, Pakistan, and Syria.
In May, a gruesome video emerged online showing a militant slicing parts of a dead Syrian soldier's torso before turning to the camera and putting the heart in his mouth.
The footage sent shockwaves across the world and sparked an outrage among both supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and opposition figures.
Earlier in the month, Takfiri extremists desecrated the grave of one of the companions of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) near the capital Damascus.
