Tehran, Oct 1, IRNA � The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran are hosting a meeting on ways to improve the quality of life of people with physical or mental disabilities.
The consultative meeting is taking place in Tehran from September 30 to October 2 and is paying particular attention to the barriers faced by the disabled.

�People with disabilities face a range of problems living a normal life and participating in educational and professional activities,� said Olivier Martin, head of the ICRC mission in Iran. �National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies can play a crucial role in helping disabled people improve the quality of their lives, obtain health services and enhance their social and economic well-being as equal members of their communities.�

Representatives of 18 National Societies � from the Philippines, Indonesia, Jordan, Cambodia, Nepal, Australia, Norway, Egypt, Iraq, Viet Nam, Palestine, Ghana, Sudan, Colombia, Myanmar, Burundi, Syria and Iran � as well as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are attending the meeting.

This consultative meeting aims to enhance understanding of the barriers faced by people with disabilities and to explore methods of mobilizing the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to promote full inclusion of disabled people in society.

The ICRC carries out activities for disabled people on the basis of need. These activities include physical rehabilitation services provided directly or in association with national authorities and national societies during armed conflicts and other emergencies. The ICRC is also ready to provide expertise, advice and support for national societies launching programs addressing the specific needs of the disabled.
