Iran stresses political solution for Syria

Iran President Hassan Rouhani has reiterated that the crisis in Syria should be settled through political means.
Speaking at a Friday press conference after the opening of the Non-Aligned Movement(NAM)s Ministerial Meeting on Cooperation for the Rule of Law at the International Level, held at the UN headquarters in New York, Rouhani stressed that foreign-backed terrorist groups should leave Syria.

He called for an end to the foreign aid to the terrorist groups active in the Arab country, specifically those affiliated with al-Qaeda.

The Iranian president underscored the necessity of laying the groundwork for an agreement between the government of Syria and the opposition.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

Rouhani also hailed Irans Thursday nuclear talks with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany as a positive step in the right direction.

He said the participants agreed to meet again in Geneva, where Tehran will present its proposal to gradually end the nuclear dispute.

The Iranian chief executive also called for a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction and urged all regional countries to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
