Iran ready to attend Geneva II if asked unconditionally: Rouhani

Irans President Hassan Rouhani says Tehran is ready to take part in the planned Geneva II conference on the Syrian crisis if invited without any preconditions.
If invited without any preconditions, Iran will participate in the [Geneva 2] conference in order to help resolve the Syrian crisis, Rouhani said in a meeting with UN and Arab League special envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, in New York on Thursday.
During the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the 68th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Iranian president urged an immediate settlement to the ongoing conflict in Syria.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to help settle this crisis, he stated.
Everyone should make efforts to end war and bloodshed in Syria at the shortest possible time, Rouhani pointed out.
Brahimi, for his part, briefed the Iranian president on the latest developments in Syria and said he would like to see Tehran attend the Geneva II conference.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced due to the violence.

On May 7, Russia and the US agreed in the Russian capital Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.

However, the date of the event keeps slipping as Syrias foreign-backed opposition coalition remains divided over taking part in the second round of Geneva talks. They have repeatedly refused to take part in the conference unless Syrian President Bashar al-Assad steps down.

The Syrian government has already announced that it is ready to take part in the peace conference without any preconditions in an effort to help end over two years of deadly turmoil in the country.
