Police seize over 1 ton of narcotics in central Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's drug combat squads have seized more than 1 ton of illicit drugs in separate operations in the Central province of Qom during the last Iranian month (ended September 22), a provincial police commander announced on Tuesday.

We discovered and seized over a ton of various types of narcotics last month, Qom Province Police Commander Brigadier General Kazem Mojtabaei said today.

He noted that the seized drugs included more than 740 kilograms of opium, over 245 kilograms of hashish and more than 8 kilograms of morphine.

We arrested 545 drug traffickers and disbanded two drug rings in the said period, Brigadier General Mojtabaei said.

Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost nearly 4,000 of their personnel in the countrys combat against narcotics.

Iran spends billions of dollars and has lost thousands of its police troops in the war against traffickers.

Every year, Iran burns more than 60 tons of seized narcotics as a symbol of its determination to fight drugs.

Iran has recently established a central database and strengthened police-judiciary cooperation in a new effort to combat organized crime.
