Turkish President Abdullah Gul says it would be unrealistic to hold any discussion about the ongoing crisis in Syria without the presence of Iran.Addressing reporters in New York on Sunday, Gul added that both Iran and Turkey are directly involved in the ongoing developments in Syria, Turkish official news agency, Anadolu Agency, reported.
Frankly, its unrealistic to talk about Syria without Iran. There has yet to be a common understanding with Iran, but you cannot exclude it, the Turkish president stated.
Gul, who is in New York to participate in the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, is scheduled to hold talks with his Iranian and French counterparts Hassan Rouhani and Francois Hollande mainly on the unrest in Syria.
He stressed the importance of paying the most heed to Turkey in talks about Syria given Ankaras direct relevance to the issue although many countries worldwide have been affected by the issue.
Iran also shared a similar direct connection to the crisis in the Arab state, the Turkish president added.
In a Saturday meeting with Turkey's parliament speaker Cemil Cicek, Irans Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said Tehran and Ankara agree on the need for reforms in Syria and an end to terrorist acts in the Arab country.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011.
A very large number of the militants operating inside Syria are reportedly foreign nationals. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
In a recent statement, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the number of Syrian refugees, who have fled the countrys 29-month-long conflict, reached two million.
The UN refugee agency further said some 4.2 million people have also been displaced inside Syria since the beginning of the conflict in the Arab country.
