TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran is scheduled to generate over 12,000 megawatts of electricity through the development of the country's Southern oil and gas reserves, a senior Iranian oil official said.


A senior official at the National Iranian Offshore Oil Company (NIOOC), Heidar Yarveisi, Sunday said that the NIOOC is developing 16 offshore oil and gas fields in the Persian Gulf island of Qeshm which will enable the country to generate over 12,000 megawatts of electricity in the Southern island.

The most important of the mentioned fields undergoing development is Forouz B gas field which is estimated to hold 28trln cubic feet (tcf) of gas and 180mln barrels of in-place gas condensate.

�In the first phase, the gas production ceiling from Forouz B field is projected to reach one billion cubic feet with nearly 10,000 barrels of gas condensate a day. Moreover, the field is forecast to produce 1.49mln tons of gas liquids a year and 466 tons of sulfur a day. This volume of gas will allow the generation of up to 6,000 megawatts of electricity for domestic consumption,� said Yarveisi, who oversees development projects in Qeshm.

Meanwhile, a refinery is also under construction in Qeshm with a daily production capacity of 80 million cubic feet of gas, the official added.

Early in March, Managing Director of Iran's Qeshm Free Trade Zone Esfandiyar Heidaripour announced the Persian Gulf Island will be ready to export water and power supplies to the mainland and the neighboring countries after the inauguration of its power plant and water sweetening facilities.

He told reporters that Qeshm Free Trade Zone Organization, the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), and Mapna Company have been working in a joint project to build the power plant and water sweetening facilities in Qeshm.

"Once this joint project comes into operation, we will be able to export water and electricity to the mainland or foreign countries," Heidaripour said.

He said that the 3,000-megawatt power plant can concurrently produce electricity and sweeten water.

Heidaripour noted that 90 percent of the joint project has been completed and it will become operational by early May.

In September, Managing Director of the NIOOC Mahmoud Zirakchianzadeh said that "Iran plans to build several gas power plants on Qeshm Island" after developing Forouz B gas field in the Persian Gulf waters.

He said that the project is aimed at generating 12,000 megawatts of electricity.

Stating that development of the gas field was awarded to Mapna several months ago, the NIOOC top executive said, "Mapna has completed 86 percent of seismological works and has provided Pre MDP."
