EU court rulings prove illegal nature of sanctions on Iran: MP

An Iranian lawmaker says the recent EU court rulings against the sanctions on Iranian banks and companies highlight the illegal and political nature of such bans.
The sanctions against the Iranian banks and companies were imposed without any legal basis and merely based on political objectives and [the rulings for] their removal prove the illegality of these embargoes, said Deputy Chairman of Irans Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Mansour Haqiqatpour on Sunday.

The legislator described the EU court rulings as positive but not sufficient measures and noted that the Iranian people and companies must be compensated for the heavy losses they have suffered due to the sanctions.

Haqiqatpour underlined the need for the removal of the sanctions through legal and political channels and noted that Iran should file lawsuits against the unjust embargoes with the relevant international bodies and the countrys Foreign Ministry must follow up the issue through political channels.

On September 16, Mohammad Hossein Dajmar, the managing director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), said that, following months of efforts by Iran, the EU General Court had ruled that the European bodys sanctions against the IRISL had to be lifted.

This came just eight days after the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled against the sanctions imposed on Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC).

Also on September 6, the court rejected the sanctions imposed against several Iranian banks and companies.

Iranian banks and firms have been targeted as part of US-led sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic. Washington and its allies claim that Irans nuclear energy program may have non-civilian aspects.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
