16 Iraqis killed, 20 injured in bus crash in western Iran
Sixteen Iraqi pilgrims have been killed and twenty others wounded in a deadly bus crash in Irans western province of Lorestan.
The accident occurred on the road connecting the central city of Arak to the western city of Boroujerd in Lorestan Province on Tuesday at 2:40 am local time (2210 GMT on Monday) after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

According to local medical sources, four of the injured are in critical conditions.

Thirteen of the victims lost their lives instantly and three others died en route to hospital.

All the passengers were Iraqi citizens. The driver and his assistant have survived the accident.

Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

Iraqi Shia Muslims often travel to Iran for pilgrimage to holy sites across the country.

The incident comes not long after the September 9 head-on collision between two buses which left 44 people dead near Tehran.

The last week bus crash was Irans most serious road accident in years.
