A senior Iranian lawmaker says the British government has come to regret its rash decision to close Irans embassy in London.Head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Broujerdi told IRNA on Friday that the British Foreign Secretary has requested a meeting with his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York later this month to improve bilateral relations and resume the work of the British embassy in Tehran.
On November 27, 2011, a large majority of Iranian MPs voted to downgrade diplomatic ties with Britain.
It was a response to Britain's sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran, over an alleged non-civilian side to Irans nuclear energy program.
There followed a demonstration in Tehran outside the British embassy during which the UK flag was pulled down.
After the incident, condemned in Iran, Britain withdrew its diplomatic staff from the country on November 30 and asked Irans diplomatic delegation in London to leave within 48 hours.
The closure of the British embassy was not ratified by the parliament. The parliament, rather, sought downgrading of ties with Britain from [the level of] ambassador to charge d'affaires, Boroujerdi said.
Iran has no problem with [having] relations with Britain, provided that [London] avoids mischief, he added.
