TEHRAN (Tasnim) � Iran's judiciary chief criticized the US for its hegemonic policies on the international stage, and called on Washington to do away with rash, unfair behaviors towards other nations.



The comments come as in recent weeks the White House was trying to drum up support for a military action on Syria, just before US President Barack Obama announced that he would put plans for use of force on hold following an initiative from Russia.

�Unfortunately during the past week, the Americans were threatening the Syrian resistance with military action and beating the drums of war,� Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mohammad Sadeq Amoli Larijani said on Wednesday.

"The claim of advocating human rights by a country which is ready to kill thousands of people in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries to secure its own interests is just a ridiculous claim."

But the judiciary chief expressed the hope that the US would behave rationally and refrain from unjust and irrational moves against other nations.

Most people in Europe and the US are opposed to military attack against Syria. The latest opinion poll shows public opposition to involvement in the Syrian conflict is growing, with six out of 10 Americans against missile strikes and lawmakers also divided. The figure for those against military strike is even higher in Europe.

But a political initiative, this time from Moscow, seems to have temporarily muted the clamor of those who are calling for military action.

Russia proposal involves placing chemical weapons storage sites of Syria under international control, with the aim of their subsequent destruction.

US President Barack Obama said he will put plans for a US military strike against Syria on hold if the country agrees to place its chemical weapons stockpile under international control.
