Supreme Leader’s aide: Syria emerges victorious on int’l scene

TEHRAN (FNA)- Supreme Leader’s Advisor for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati underlined the Syrian people’s victory against the rebel groups attacking their country, and said Damascus has also succeeded in its battle against the US and its allies.

“The Syrian government has not only succeeded in safeguarding its territorial integrity against the alien elements and the extremists, but also emerged victorious against the US and the Zionist regime on the international scene,” Velayati said in a meeting with a number of Jordanian political activists in Tehran on Saturday.

He referred to the EU’s recent opposition to the US attack on Syria, and said the US and its allies were isolated at the G20 summit in St Petersburg, which is considered as an international victory for Damascus.

“Syria will remain a deep-rooted Islamic-Arab country and its territorial integrity will be safeguarded,” Velayati said.

During the G20 conference, China joined Russia in opposing US action and repeatedly insisted that any solution must be political. India and Indonesia’s views were less easy to identify.

But South Africa spoke out clearly against the idea of military action without UN approval, as well as Argentina’s President Christine Kirchner and her two Latin American colleagues, the presidents of Brazil and Mexico.

Other Western allies at the table included Canada, Australia, South Korea and Japan, as well as Germany and EU leaders and they voiced separate views on the difficult question of whether or not to strike back against Syria without UN. Italy, also at the G20 table, voiced its objections.
