Rouhani appoints Torkan as head of advisors

TEHRAN, Aug.27 (MNA) In a decree issued Iranian President Hassan Rohani appointed Ali Akbar Torkan as his senior advisor and head of the presidential council of advisors.
Torkan is regarded by many as one of the most trusted members of Rohanis inner circle. A leading technocrat, he is known for his liberal views about the free market economy. During the June presidential election, Torkan served as deputy head of Rohanis election campaign office.


A graduate of Sharif University of Technology, Torkan has served in numerous governmental posts since the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979. He was head of the defense industries establishment during the Iran-Iraq war. After the war he was appointed as the defense minister in 1989 by President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. In second term of Rafsanjani's presidency, Torkan served as transport minister.
