Basij commander: US incapable of waging war against Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of Iran's Basij (volunteer) Force Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi blamed Tel Aviv and Washington for the bloodshed and bombings in Syria, but meantime underscored that the US cannot wage war on Syria.

They (the Americans) are not able to enter a new war in the region, because neither do their economic capabilities allow them nor do they have a proper morale and high spirit for starting a new war, hence this capability is not envisaged for them, Brigadier General Naqdi said in Tehran on Monday, pointing to the threats and psychological war launched by the US against the Syrian nation and government.

Brigadier General Naqdi said that although the bombings may apparently be carried out by some militant and terrorist groups, the main perpetrators of these crimes are Israel and the US.

On Saturday, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel claimed that the White House is studying different military options against Syria.

Hagel suggested the Pentagon is moving forces into place ahead of possible military action against Syria, even as President Barack Obama voiced caution.

Earlier today, a senior Iranian parliamentary official dismissed the possibility of a US attack on Syria, saying that Israel would be the first victim of such a war, if it ever breaks out."No military attack will be waged against Syria," Director-General of the parliament for International Affairs Hossein Sheikholeslam said on Monday.

"Yet, if such an inciden takes place, which is impossible, the Zionist regime will be the first victim of a military attack on Syria," he added.

Sheikholeslam stressed the Syrian army's high capabilities, and said it can heavily attack and raze the occupied territories, a place which is of vital importance to the US national security.

Also in similar remarks today, a senior Iranian legislator said Washington is not ready for any new military invasion, but in case the US and its allies dare to wage war on Syria, Moscow will support Damascus.

"The US as well as the western and Arab states and certain regional countries are beating on the drums of war, but they should know that this is not to their benefit," member of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mohammad Esmayeeli told FNA.

He said the US is in no good condition to wage a war against Damascus, and "if starts a war with Syria, the US will not achieve its desirable and needed results."

Esmayeeli said if the US and its western and Arab allies launch an aggression against Syria, "Russia will likely stand up to these threats".
