TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Iranian legislator played down the effectiveness of the US-led unilateral sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic, saying that the US Congress should come to realize that western embargoes cannot create a rift among Iranians or impede Tehran's progress.On July 31, the US House of Representatives passed a bill to tighten sanctions on Iran.
The US congressmen should know that sanctions will not undermine the will of the Iranian nation who displayed the most beautiful manifestations of Islamic democracy (on June 14) , Chairman of the parliaments National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said, addressing an open session of the parliament on Sunday.
He said unfortunately the US congressmen have come to believe this big lie that the Islamic Republic is moving towards nuclear weapons production, while this is not the case.
The Islamic Republic has very clear and candid policies on nuclear issues, the senior lawmaker said, adding, We are a serious opponent of nuclear weapons and this weapon has no place in Islamic Republics defense strategy, if the enemies of the Islamic Republic are really concerned about nuclear bombs they should give a thought to the Zionist regime which is threatening the security of the Middle East and the world by possessing more than 200 nuclear warheads, without being committed to any international undertaking.
He called on Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to defend Irans national interests in the upcoming talks with the world powers.
Washington and its western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Tehran stresses that the country has always pursued a civilian path to provide power to the growing number of Iranian population, whose fossil fuel would eventually run dry.
Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.
Tehran has dismissed west's demands as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians' national resolve to continue the path.
The Islamic Republic says that it considers its nuclear case closed as it has come clean of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s questions and suspicions about its past nuclear activities.
