Iran foreign minister condemns police crackdown in Egypt

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has condemned the deadly crackdown in Egypt, calling for the cessation of violence in the North African country.
Zarif made the remarks in a telephone conversation with Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on Friday.

The Iranian minister, who described the situation in Egypt as precarious, called on the OIC to immediately intervene and find peaceful solutions to stop internal conflicts and curb the crisis in Egypt.

The OIC secretary general, for his part, expressed deep concerns over the spiraling violence in Egypt.

He noted that OIC will do its utmost in view of helping the peaceful resolution of the Egyptian crisis, which was triggered following the July 3 military ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.

On Wednesday, the deadly police crackdown on two protest camps in Cairo left at least 638 people dead.

Egypt is currently locked down under a month-long curfew and the police have been authorized to use live ammunitions in case of attacks against state buildings.
