US going down wrong path vis--vis Iran: Lawmaker
An Iranian lawmaker says the US is following the wrong policies with regard to Iran and must drop its hostile approaches, if it really seeks to engage in negotiations with the Islamic Republic.
Unfortunately, the US behavior is totally hypocritical and dishonest and the country is pursuing an inappropriate diplomatic trend with regard to establishing relations with Iran, said Mansour Haqiqatpour, vice-chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran's Majlis on Friday.

The legislator pointed to a request last month by 131 US lawmakers from the White House to engage in talks with Tehran following the election of Hassan Rouhani as president, on the one hand, and the recent approval of a sanctions bill against Iran by the House of Representatives, on the other hand, noting, Such contradictory behavior makes the Islamic Republic of Iran distrust talks with the US.
In order to talk with Iran, the Americans should renounce their paradoxical behavior and adopting stances in bad temper, so that the process of talks between the two countries can take shape based on realities, the MP said.
On July 31, the US House of Representatives approved a bill to impose tougher sanctions on Tehrans oil exports and financial sector.

The bill, which must be approved by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama to become law, seeks to cut Iran's oil exports by one million barrels per day over a year.

This while shortly after Rouhanis inauguration ceremony on August 4 the White House announced that it is prepared to work with Irans new administration on the issue of the Islamic Republics nuclear energy program.

The US has imposed several rounds of illegal sanctions on Iran based on the accusation that Iran's nuclear energy program may contain a military dimension.

Tehran has categorically rejected West's accusations, arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
