Pro-Morsi alliance calls for mass rallies Sunday

A coalition of groups supportive of ousted President Mohamed Morsi has called for mass demonstrations on Sunday to demand his reinstatement.

Scheduled to coincide with the Laylat al-Qadr (the "Night of Power," when Muslims believe the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad), rallies will be staged in squares across Egypt.

"The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy calls for continuing peaceful demonstrations and marches in all squares until all goals are realized," the pro-Morsi coalition said in a statement obtained by Anadolu Agency.

Ever since his July 3 removal by the army, supporters of the deposed president have been holding daily mass demonstrations and sit-ins nationwide to demand his reinstatement.

The two largest sit-ins have been in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in eastern Cairo and Nahda Square in Giza.

The government, meanwhile, has said that it views the two pro-Morsi sit-ins as a "threat" to Egypt's national security.

On Wednesday, it mandated the Interior Minister to take "all necessary measures" to disperse the protests.
