Israel irked by Europe’s positive view on Iran's next president: Lawmaker

An Iranian lawmaker says Israel is worried about Europe’s positive attitude towards the administration of the next Iranian president, Hassan Rohani.
“This [Israeli] regime views future agreements between Iran and Europe as a threat against itself and is thus seeking to disrupt the process of such interactions,” said Ahmad Shohani, a member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, on Wednesday.

Rohani won Iran's June 14 presidential election, garnering 50.7 percent of a total of over 36 million ballots. The voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent.

The Iranian president-elect has pledged to seek “constructive interaction” with the world through a policy of moderation, a move that has been welcomed in many Western circles.

Shohani warned against Israel’s plots to reverse the new positive trend, adding, “Under the existing circumstances, Europe should be vigilant and lay the groundwork for the improvement of ties with Iran.”
“On the other hand, the European countries should pay attention to their own interests and priorities instead of caring for the interests of the Zionist lobbies,” Shohani added.
The legislator cited Western double standards as a major factor impeding the relations between Iran and the West, noting, “Undoubtedly, promotion of Iran-West interactions in the future can be solely achieved through constructive and confidence-building measures; therefore the West should avoid [the application of] double standards.”

Shohani described the improvement of Iran-Europe ties as a public demand from the president-elect, cautioning, however, that to achieve that goal, the next administration should not compromise on the fundamental rights of the Iranian nation.
