Iran anticipates 'practical changes' in US behavior: spokesman

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tuesday that the Islamic republic expects "practical changes" in the US behavior towards the country.
Making the remarks in his weekly press briefing, Abbas Araqchi said that the Iranians' criterion to assess the US position towards their country is "American's behavior in action."

"We are awaiting practical changes in the US behavior" regarding the Islamic republic, said Araqchi when asked about the improvement of the relations between Iran and the West, particularly the United States, after the recent presidential elections in Iran.

The Islamic republic's energy and financial sectors are under intensive sanction pressure from the United States and its allies, who suspect that Iran's nuclear program might aim at weapon-grade activities while Iran insists that it is only for civilian use.

Hopes have grown among the Iranian people for better relations with the Western world after moderate Hassan Rouhani won the presidential election on June 14 by garnering 50.71 percent of the votes.

Rouhani will take office in early August to succeed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has been ruling Iran for eight years.
